Our Atlanta personal injury attorneys at Ashby Thelen Lowry know that drunk driving takes a tremendous toll on individuals and families in Georgia and throughout the U.S.

Drunk driving collisions, injuries, and fatalities are particularly devastating because they are entirely preventable yet result in severe consequences due to impaired judgment and reduced reaction times.

These incidents often involve high-speed collisions that cause catastrophic injuries or death, profoundly impacting not only the victims but also their families and communities. The emotional and psychological trauma extends far beyond the immediate aftermath, leaving lasting scars. Moreover, the legal and financial burdens add to the tragedy, amplifying the frustration and sorrow of knowing that such losses could have been avoided if the driver had not chosen to drive under the influence.

Unfortunately, the drunk driving crash statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration leave little hope these crashes will subside.

Drunk Driving Crash

Last year, throughout the U.S., there were 13,524 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving traffic crashes, an average of one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality every 39 minutes. These alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounted for 32% of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities nationwide.

Closer to home, there were 1,797 traffic fatalities throughout Georgia last year. Alcohol was involved in 599 crash deaths, 507 of which had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over .08%,  and 350 crash deaths involving a driver with a BAC over .15%. Nationwide, 67% (9,047) were in traffic crashes in which at least one driver had a BAC of .15 BAC or higher.

Have You Been Injured or Lost a Loved One in a Drunk Driving Crash in Georgia?

Because of the consistent number of drunk driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities throughout Georgia and nationwide, some states are considering lowering their driving limit BAC, which is currently .08 in most states. Without tangible evidence regarding how this would impact crash statistics, we can simply hope more people reconsider getting behind the wheel after they have been drinking.
